It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.

Both stores and Menards and WalMart, have an unwritten, “if asked” policy. They generally won’t offer it unless asked and its not promoted in any signage or commercials. Ask to speak with the manager, and have your military ID with you. And it must be a valid Government issued ID. Sometimes even the managers can get confused, which is understandable if they never served.
